Sanwo-Olu supports new speaker, Meranda
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has pledged to strengthen collaboration with the Lagos State House of Assembly, stating that both arms of goverment will work together to sustain the state’s progress. “We will build on past successes and deliver transformational progress,” he said during a courtesy visit by the newly appointed Speaker Mojisola Meranda to State House in Ikeja.
Minister commissions new power transformer at Isolo substation
Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu has commissioned a 110MVA transformer and three 33kV feeder bays at the Isolo Transmission Substation in Lagos. Financed by the Central Bank of Nigeria, the project aims to improve power delivery and boost the substation’s capacity by 88MW. “We are dedicated to addressing the challenges in the sector to ensure energy security and sustainability,” Adelabu said.
Police reject claims of rising crime rates
The Lagos State Police Command has dismissed a recent Guardian Newspaper report claiming escalating crime rates, calling it outdated and misleading. “The story does not align with present facts,” said police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin. He pointed out that Lagos was recently recognized as the safest state in Nigeria, with near-zero crime recorded during the 2024 Yuletide. Commissioner of Police Olanrewaju Ishola condemned the article, describing it as an “ill-thought-out decision” and reassured the public that resources have been deployed to ensure safety.
Residents cite LAWMA’s ineffectiveness, prefer cart pushers
Lagos residents are turning to cart pushers due to the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) and Private Sector Partnership (PSP) operators’ failure to ensure timely waste evacuation, Peoples Gazette reported. Several residents in areas like FESTAC, Dopemu, and Shasha expressed frustration with LAWMA’s irregular service, with some seeing pickups only once a month or even every few months. “We prefer cart pushers because they are readily available,” said Joan Obasi from FESTAC. Meanwhile, LAWMA spokesperson, Folashade Kadiri, condemned the use of illegal cart pushers, emphasizing the agency’s commitment to improving waste management and enforcing environmental laws.
Petrol stations adjust pump price
Some filling stations in Lagos adjusted the pump price of premium motor spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, Daily Trust reported. While the retail stations belonging to the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), continued to sell at N925, other stations were selling as high as N970 per litre.
Three UNILAG lecturers awarded Sahara MAD grant
Three lecturers from the University of Lagos have been named the first recipients of the Sahara Making a Difference (MAD) Grant, receiving $12,000 each annually to support their student-focused initiatives. The recipients—Dr. Gbeminiyi Sobamowo, Dr. Ayodele Ibrahim Shittu, and Dr. Peter Nogichukwuka Amah—were announced during the university’s 55th convocation ceremonies.
Football coaches association board dismissed over misconduct
The Lagos State Football Association (LSFA) has dismissed the board of the Football Coaches Association over alleged misconduct and insubordination. LSFA Secretary Akeem Rabiu-Okikioposu stated that the dismissed board, led by Tairu Hassan, violated several statutes by questioning LSFA’s authority to organize coaching programs without seeking approval.
EHAI launches COM-WASH project to curb cholera spread
The Equitable Health Access Initiative (EHAI) has launched the ‘Community-Centered WASH Interventions to Control Cholera’ (COM-WASH) project in seven Lagos LGAs. The project, funded by USAID, aims to enhance water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) practices and raise awareness on cholera prevention. “We didn’t stop the last cholera outbreak with medical intervention; it was the result of cross-agency collaboration,” Health Commissioner Prof. Akin Abayomi said at a stakeholder dialogue.
EFCC arraigns former AMCON MD, others for defrauding Arik Airline
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned ex-Managing Director of AMCON, Ahmed Kuru, and four others for allegedly defrauding Arik Airline of N76 billion and $31.5 million at the Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja. The defendants pleaded not guilty, and bail was granted in the sum of N20 million each. The trial is set for March 2025.
Pastor Idowu Iluyomade launches new ministry
The suspended pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, City of David Parish, Pastor Idowu Iluyomade has launched a new ministry, The Family Fellowship. In a viral video shared on Monday, Iluyomade celebrated the ministry’s inaugural service at the Civic Centre, Victoria Island, inviting the public to join and promising a “great experience.” The cleric was suspended from RCCG in 2024 following controversy over his wife’s birthday celebration after the death of Herbert Wigwe, a key church member.
