Residents raise concern over 50 percent hike in onions prices

Lagos residents have raised concerns over a sudden 50 percent hike in the price of onions.

Traders and consumers told the News Agency of Nigeria in separate interviews on Sunday, that the price of onions have surged with a bag now selling for N180,000 up from N90,000 to N120,000 just two to three months ago.

Rabiu Aliu, an onion trader in Alimosho, and Mr. Judith Amen, a perishable foodstuff trader at Amuwo Odofin area, told NAN that the hike in the price of onions due to the produce being out of season and the difficulty of sourcing it from the North.

“Onion is no more in season. We are not in its peak season, that is why it is expensive. When we order from the North, we sometimes do not get delivery of the produce due to its unavailability.” Aliu said.

“We can no longer predict the price of onions in the market, every other day we get to the market, the price increases,” The Guardian quoted Amen.

Consumers complained of the hike in the price of onion with some saying they buy only what they can afford.
