Pollution: Lagos mediates in dispute between Millennium Estate, Premier Polypack

The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) and the Lagos State Ministry of Housing have mediated in a dispute between the residents of Millennium Estate and Premier Polypack Ltd in Gbagada area regarding complaints about the environmental impact of the company’s industrial activities.

During the meeting, Mrs. Toyin Ogunbayo, who spoke on behalf of the residents, noted that emissions from the company’s industrial activities compromised the air quality in the area, marred the walls of their buildings and disrupted their sleep.

LASEPA’s Director of Noise Control, Mrs. Olabisi Shonibare, urged both parties to maintain peace, noting that the company has committed to implementing measures to address the concerns.

Representatives of Premier Polypack Ltd explained that the company has converted their diesel generator to gas to reduce emissions, while plans are afoot to block the space between the company and the estate with industrial iron sheet to prevent emissions from penetrating into the estate.

They also explained that the company has ordered a component of Local Exhaust Ventilator (LEV) from Europe which is expected for delivery and installation before the end of February. They noted that when the machine is installed, it will capture the fugitive emissions in the environment and subsequently neutralize it before dispersal.

The government representatives assured that they will closely monitor the company to ensure the timely delivery and installation of the new emission-reducing machine by the end of February.
