Obasa’s lawyer swap deepens Assembly crisis
Reinstated Speaker Mudashiru Obasa has replaced the Lagos Assembly’s legal team without consulting the 35 lawmakers who impeached him, sparking outrage. Femi Falana (SAN), representing the lawmakers, condemned the move. “A plaintiff cannot impose a lawyer on the defendants,” Falana said. The court adjourned the case to March 17 as the power struggle deepens, Vanguard Newspaper reported.
Power outages persist as EKEDC blames transmission faults
Lagos residents have continued to face power cuts due to faults on the 330kV transmission lines. The Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) confirmed this on Monday. “We are still experiencing reduced power allocation from our TCN partners,” EKEDC said, citing issues with the Transmission Company of Nigeria. The company assured customers it is working to restore supply and thanked them for their patience, The Punch Newspaper reported.
Lagos activates emergency response after diphtheria outbreak at King’s College
The Lagos State Government has activated its Emergency Response Committee following a diphtheria outbreak at King’s College Victoria Island Annexe. Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, confirmed that a 12-year-old student, the index case, died from complications despite receiving treatment. Of 34 close contacts under observation, 14 developed symptoms, with 12 admitted for treatment at LUTH. A vaccination campaign will be launched for students and healthcare providers, while infection control measures at the school will be improved. “The outbreak is under control and there is no need to panic because measures will continue in earnest of to protect our citizens from infectious disease outbreaks,” Abayomi said.
Oregun theatre reconstruction underway to boost creative spaces
The Lagos State Government has begun reconstructing Oregun Theatre to serve as a cultural hub. Commissioner Toke Benson-Awoyinka said the project will provide creative spaces for the state’s youth and ease congestion at commercial centers, Nairametrics reported. “We are not just rebuilding; we are upgrading,” she said. Originally damaged during the EndSARS protests, the site’s redevelopment aims to revitalize the arts scene.
Intense competition as APC chieftains jostle for Lagos chairmanship
With the Lagos local government elections approaching in June or July, intense competition is unfolding across councils, particularly in Odiolowo-Ojuwoye LCDA, where over 25 APC chieftains, including Tolu Kelani, Sheu Olajide, and Seyi Jakande, are vying for the chairmanship ticket. The same scenario plays out in Ikosi-Isheri, Somolu, and Epe, where multiple aspirants, including former lawmakers, are in the race, The Nation Newspaper reported. While some see council autonomy as an opportunity for grassroots development, others view it as a political bargaining chip. The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), chaired by Justice Bola Ighile, is yet to release the election timetable, but Sanwo-Olu has charged the commission to ensure credible polls.
PDP factions reconcile, vow to challenge APC in 2027
Lagos PDP factions have reunited following a reconciliation meeting at the residence of the party’s first chairman, Muritala Ashorobi. Leaders, including Olabode George and Philip Aivoji, resolved to maintain party unity and mobilize for the 2027 elections. They warned against anti-party activities, urging members to stop working for APC or leave, Business Day Newspaper reported.
Sanwo-Olu launches programme to improve building safety
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has unveiled the Certified Accreditors’ Programme (CAP) to enhance building safety in Lagos. Developed by LASBCA in response to the 2021 Ikoyi collapse, the initiative aims to prevent future incidents through government-private sector collaboration, The Nation Newspaper reported. “By reducing the risk of building collapses, we protect lives and property,” Sanwo-Olu said, urging stakeholders to uphold strict compliance standards.
Lagos to probe Air Force invasion of Ikeja Electric HQ
The State Government has launched an investigation into the Nigerian Air Force’s invasion of Ikeja Electric’s headquarters over a power disconnection. Commissioner for Energy, Biodun Ogunleye, called the attack “unacceptable” and vowed to ensure justice for victims. He urged the Air Force to prevent a recurrence, emphasizing that disputes must be resolved lawfully, Arise TV reported.
Demolition of illegal shops on Idumota pedestrian bridge resumes
The Lagos State Government has resumed clearing illegal shops attached to the Idumota pedestrian bridge to improve accessibility and safety. Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab said the joint operation by drainage services and LAGESC targeted encroaching structures. A video shared online showed officials demolishing cemented shops with sledgehammers, Nairametrics reported.
Agboyi-Ketu to host Seyi Tinubu free medical outreach, iftar distribution
Agboyi-Ketu LCDA will host the Seyi Tinubu Renewed Hope Youth Empowerment Free Medical Healthcare Services on March 12 at the council secretariat. Chairman Dele Oshinowo said residents will receive free screenings, medications, and tests for various health conditions. The council will also distribute free Iftar food packs for Ramadan.
