Mega Chicken Agidingbi: Home away from home

One thing Lagos never lacks are fast food outlets that curate bubbling and enchanting flavours; Mega Chicken Restaurant is one of such outlets.

Surprisingly, this food company has only four branches across Lagos: two on the mainland, in Festac and Ikeja (Agidingbi), and two more on the Island, in Lekki and Ikota.

We tried out the restaurant in Ikeja, located at First Gate bus-stop, Agidingbi.

This restaurant is well known within the Ikeja area for its fresh and home-cooked meals, ranging from fast food meals to local Nigerian dishes like Amala and ewedu soup, as well as their continental cuisine.

Their menu list is divided into five sections: African, fast food, Chinese/continental, bakery, pizzarie, and breakfast.

Their breakfast menu includes full English breakfast with sunny side eggs, scrambled eggs, omelettes, and sandwiches.

For fast food, their menu boasts a wide variety of options, from grills to jollof rice, salad bowls, fruit salad, and pasta.

Their pizza menu consists of chicken barbecue pizza, vegetarian pizza, beef pizza, and shawarma wraps in different flavours.

They also have an in-house bakery for all their baked goods. The bakery menu includes fruit bread, regular slice bread, coconut bread, banana cake slices, cupcakes, birthday cakes in different sizes, pastries, and ice cream.

Their African meal menu consists of wraps of amala, semo, pounded yam, eba, wheat, and different soups such as vegetable, egusi, okro, ewedu, and more. They also have Ofada rice, rice and beans, unripe boiled plantain, plantain porridge, and more.

For their Chinese and continental dishes, you will find oriental soup bowls, fried rice, Singapore noodles, spring rolls, assorted meat dishes, and more.

We loved that their menu included pictures.

Food Quality

We decided to order their signature ‘yamarita,’ which is fried yam coated in egg batter. We opted for egg sauce as a side dish and also a scoop of Asun meat. Each piece of the yamarita was flavorful and delicious, and the egg sauce made the dish even tastier.

The Asun meat pieces had just the right amount of spiciness and were well-seasoned too.

For our continental meal, we chose their chicken spring rolls as a starter. The filling was more than enough, and the size was moderately large.

We opted for spaghetti bolognese and spicy chicken wings as our main meal. The drinks at the continental restaurant were limited. They had a few options for milkshakes and only a handful of cocktails. We ordered a vanilla milkshake which was creamy, filled to the brim, and delicious.

The spaghetti portion was very generous for the medium-sized order. The meal was well-seasoned and delicious. The spicy wings were perfect. They were crispy yet tender, with a spicy, juicy sauce.

Service

The efficiency of their staff is impressive. Orders are taken and prepared with speed and accuracy, minimising wait times even during busy periods. They handle special requests and concerns with patience and respect, ensuring a positive dining experience for all.

The plating for our meal at their Chinese restaurant was excellent. We were impressed by the service from the waitress.

Please note that dining at the Mega Chicken Chinese restaurant attracts a 10% service charge fee on your order.

The ambience in Mega Chicken is lively, with an interior design that is both modern and inviting.

The decor features a blend of vibrant yellow tables and chairs, with pink lounge chairs in some sections, creating a comfortable atmosphere.

Large windows allow plenty of natural light to flood the space, enhancing the welcoming feel. The restaurant is kept cool with air conditioning units and fans. The aromas from the meals on display make your mouth water and add to the vibrant scent of the restaurant.

Despite the high foot traffic, the restaurant maintains an impressive level of cleanliness. Tables are promptly cleared and sanitised, floors are spotless, and every corner is meticulously maintained.

Patrons get value for their money by enjoying home-cooked and fresh meals at an affordable price.

Comparing the food and service quality to the prices charged, it’s clear why Mega Chicken is one of the best fast food restaurants in the Ikeja area.

The food is delicious, and the service is equally impressive, with friendly and efficient staff ensuring a pleasant dining experience.

The dining area is equally well-maintained. Tables are promptly cleared and sanitised between customers, and the floors are regularly swept and mopped to keep the space inviting and tidy. Even during peak hours, the staff ensures that the dining area remains clean and comfortable for all patrons.

The staff also follow strict hygiene protocols, ensuring that the food aisle area remains spotless and organised.

The Agidingbi branch in Ikeja is quite easy to locate from various parts of the city, making it a convenient dining choice for both locals and visitors.

The restaurant provides ample parking space, accommodating a large number of vehicles. This makes it hassle-free for customers to find a spot, even during busy hours. At night, the parking area is well-lit and secure, ensuring the safety of guests’ vehicles.

As a regular patron, we can attest to the consistency of the delicious meals, which are always prepared with the same attention to detail and fresh ingredients.

However, on a busy weekend, the restaurant can be a bit rowdy with more patrons, but their staff’s professionalism and efficiency remain unwavering, ensuring that everyone gets to enjoy their dining experience.

Innovation

In terms of food creativity, presentation, and overall dining experiences, we rate Mega Chicken restaurant highly.

Their menu is a blend of traditional and contemporary dishes, featuring inventive twists on classic favourites alongside bold new creations.

This variety caters to diverse tastes and keeps the dining experience exciting for both regulars and newcomers.

Sustainability

From our observations, Mega Chicken does not explicitly advertise its sustainability credentials. However, the restaurant takes steps to reduce single-use plastics, opting for reusable alternatives for takeaway bowls.

Waiting Time

Since Mega Chicken operates an over-the-counter food service, the wait time at the fast food and African restaurant sections largely depends on the number of people on the queue.

However, the queue moves fast enough during busy hours as they have enough staff on hand to attend to customers.

For the Chinese/continental restaurant, we were greeted promptly by friendly staff and quickly escorted to a clean, ready table. The waiting time for our meal was around 30 to 45 minutes.

If you want your meal as a takeaway order, you will be escorted to a waiting lounge area instead of a table.

Online Presence

Mega Chicken’s website is well-designed, user-friendly, and informative.

It features an easy-to-navigate layout, complete with detailed menu descriptions, prices, and vibrant images of the dishes. Information about opening hours, location, and contact details is readily accessible, ensuring customers can find everything they need with ease.

Their social media pages are also active and accessible. They have an option to order food via WhatsApp through various chat lines, making it easy to access their food at the touch of your phone screen.

They are also available on food delivery apps such as Chowdeck and Glovo.

At the Ikeja branch, you can book the amusement kids section for birthday parties for as low as N25,000 for 20 children. The rates are charged based on the number of children attending the party.

They also have a private dining room at the Chinese/continental restaurant for an exclusive party. This costs N25,000 for 25 people for three hours.
