Sabur Akanbi Oluwa, a member of the All Progressive Congress, is the lawmaker representing Ajeromi Ifelodun Constituency 2 in the Lagos State House of Assembly.
He was first elected as a member of the House in 2023.
Early life and education
Mr. Oluwa was born on January 13, 1987. His father, Prince Rabiu Adio Oluwa is an APC chieftain and the apex leader of Lagos West senatorial district.
In 2009, He obtained a bachelor’s degree in history and international relations from the University of Lagos. In 2016, He also earned a masters degree in public and international affairs from the same university.
Mr. Oluwa worked as a legislative officer at the Lagos State House of Assembly from 2012 to 2019.
Political career
According to one commentator, Mr. Oluwa’s campaign for the House seat was steeped in public hostility towards his family name in Ajegunle.
In December 2022, during his campaign, Mr. Oluwa sponsored a street football competition for his constituency. While speaking at the maiden edition of the tournament, ‘SAO Community Football Competition’, he promised to create more youth and sports programmes for his constituency, if elected.
In March 2023, Mr. Oluwa won the election by polling 21,009 votes. He defeated candidates of the Labour Party (LP) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who scored 10,826 votes and 1,714 votes respectively.
The lawmaker promised his constituents effective and sound representation after taking the oath of office.
“The peculiarities of our constituency, being one of the most populous and ethnically diverse in Nigeria, set us apart. We will leverage these to attract the requisite attention and development to Ajegunle,” he said.
Legislative work
Mr. Oluwa is the chairman of the House Committee on energy and mineral resources.
In July 2023, he offered 200 secondary school students free JAMB forms and free six-month intensive lectures through the SAO Educational Support Scheme. One of the top scorers in the UTME examinations who broke the exam’s record in the Ajeromi-Ifelodun constituencies received the sum of one million naira to support his higher education.
In September 2023, during an inspection of ongoing state government projects in his constituency, Mr. Oluwa urged his constituents to adopt good environmental practices by refraining from the indiscriminate dumping of waste into canals and drainages to prevent flooding and improve the environment ecosystem.
In September 2023, he commissioned a borehole project facilitated by Wasiu Bakare Jnr, a member of the APC in his constituency.
In May 2024, as part of an education intervention project, Mr. Oluwa gave out 1,000 solar lamps to 1,000 beneficiary students from 51 schools across 15 communities in the Ajeromi-Ifelodun and Amunwo-Ojoo riverine areas of Lagos State.
Also in May 2024, he moved a motion regarding the effects of the fire incident in the Alayabiagba area of Ajeromi-Ifelodun Constituency II. He proposed that the Ministry of Information should launch a public awareness campaign to educate Lagos residents about the dangers of indiscriminate sales and storage of cooking gas and other combustibles.
In July 2024, Mr. Oluwa hosted a public hearing by the House on the Lagos State Electricity Bill. He stated that the bill would ensure Lagosians, both residents and business owners, have access to the best electricity supply to enhance productivity and quality of life.
In August 2024, Mr. Oluwa offered grants to two graduate entrepreneurs of the Ajegunle Business School at the Ajégúnlè Economic Summit to support their business ventures. He also encouraged the young entrepreneurs to remain resilient, innovative, and determined.
