A suit has been filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja, aiming to prevent the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) from arresting Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu after his term ends.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the suit was filed by one Martha Kanu and seeks to protect Sanwo-Olu from potential investigations following his tenure.
In an affidavit deposed in support of the suit, Kanu, a lawyer, said the governor informed her about the facts of the case during a teleconference meeting.
However, the Lagos State government has distanced itself from the legal action, stating that the governor did not authorize or engage anyone to file the case.
“We wish to clarify that Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, at no time, sued or briefed any legal practitioner to file a suit on his behalf concerning the above subject matter,” Lagos State Attorney-General Lawal Pedro said in an official statement.
Pedro also emphasised that it would be “implausible” for the governor to take such a step, noting that Sanwo-Olu is protected by constitutional immunity and has almost three years left in office.
The state government’s position highlights that any legal move regarding post-tenure matters is premature and unauthorised.
