Lagos launches ‘Project 10 Million’ for medical screening

The Lagos State Health District IV, in partnership with the state government, has rolled out Project 10 Million, a nationwide health initiative aimed at screening and diagnosing 10 million Nigerians for hypertension, diabetes, and obesity.

Why it matters: Chronic diseases like hypertension and diabetes are major contributors to preventable deaths in Lagos. This project seeks to improve public awareness, encourage early detection, and provide treatment to reduce mortality rates.

Go deeper: Since its launch on November 1, the initiative has been ongoing across Lagos State primary health care centres and general hospitals. Participants receive free health screenings and medications. The program also encourages enrollment in the Ilera Eko Health Insurance Scheme, which offers affordable healthcare services for an annual fee of N15,000.

Quote: “We are working to ensure that 10 million people are aware of their health status and receive treatment where necessary,” permanent secretary of the Lagos State Health District IV, Dr. Abimbola Bowale, said. “This project has seen massive turnout, and we urge more residents to take advantage of this opportunity.”
