Lagos Island residents receive palliative from newly launched food bank

The Lafiaji Development Association (LDA), a non-governmental organisation, has launched a food bank initiative to support vulnerable residents in Lagos Island amidst current economic challenges.

Why it matters: Food prices have surged across the country and Lagos residents have not been spared. Food relief efforts are more important than ever. The state government earlier this year launched an affordable food scheme called ‘Ounje Eko’.

Go deeper: The LDA food bank initiative targets the elderly across five community zones—Simpson, Ije, Oke Suna, Obalende, and Araromi—providing rice, garri, spaghetti, tea, semo, salt, and sugar, P.M News reported.

Quote: “We need to ensure that we’re our neighbor’s, our brother’s keeper,” a member of the LDA and state commissioner for economic planning and budget, Ope George, said. “So, as an association that is part of the community, we know what they need. It’s for us to try as much as possible to help our fellow brothers and sisters within our community.”
