Three weeks after its launch and amidst overwhelming public support, the Lagos Island East Local Council Development Area (LIELCDA) free school bus service is expanding with the addition of two new buses.
Hon. Muibi Alade, the Executive Chairman of LIELCDA, announced the expansion in a statement, acknowledging the “huge success” of the initiative and the “popular demand” for more buses.
“We are appropriately flattered and elated by the good wishes we have gotten on this,” he said.
The program has now been bolstered by a Toyota Coaster Bus and a Toyota Hiace Bus.
Launched earlier this month, the free school bus service aimed to ease the financial burden of transportation on students and their parents/guardians.
The Record reported that the initial fleet consisted of a 30-seater coaster bus and 10 minibuses and catered to over 1,000 students from 31 public schools.
The new additions bring the total number of buses in the program to 13, significantly increasing its capacity and reach.
A quite similar scheme is ongoing in Ojodu LCDA. It kicked off last year and has continued to provide succour to commuters in the council area.
