Lagos‍ Govt responds to severe flooding near Third Mainland Bridge

The Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, has responded to the flooding situation around the Iyana-Oworo, Olopo-Meji axis in Lagos.

There has been heavy rainfall in Lagos since about 5am on Wednesday, leading to flooding in several parts of the state, including areas like Ikeja, Oshodi, Gbagada, and Lekki.

Gidi Traffic, an online traffic monitoring service, shared a video of the flooded area from Iyana-Oworo, Olopo-Meji leading to the Third Mainland Bridge via their official X account.

“Iyana-Oworo, Olopo-Meji area heading to 3rd Mainland Bridge this morning is completely flooded, causing long traffic that extends to Alapere,” the tweet read.

In response to this tweet, Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner of the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources described the situation as a flash flood and assured residents that the flooding would subside in about one to two hours.

“The Olopo-Meji inward 3rd Mainland situation is a flash flood due to the high intensity and long duration of the rain, coupled with the high tidal lagoon level at the moment.

“Rest assured, it will go away in about 1-2 hours. As the high tidal level of the lagoon goes down, the rain/storm water will be able to discharge into the lagoon,” Wahab’s tweet read.
