The Lagos State government on Monday crushed 1,500 motorcycles, popularly known as Okada.

These motorcycles were impounded during several enforcements of the ban on operation in 10 Local Governments (LGs) and 15 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in the state.

The crushing exercise, which took place at the Taskforce yard in Ikeja, was supervised by the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi.

Addressing the media, Osiyemi reiterated the government’s stance on the ban, adding that it is not relenting in its efforts to apprehend, impound, and crush motorcycles operating in restricted areas.

The commissioner stressed the importance of the ban in maintaining order, reducing road accidents, and enhancing security.

He urged both operators and passengers to adhere to the ban and avoid the designated restricted areas to avert the consequences, including three years imprisonment as stipulated in the Transport Reform Law (TSRL) 2018.

“The ban on Okada in specified regions is crucial for maintaining order, reducing risks associated with unauthorized motorcycle operation and also improving security,” he said.

The restricted local government areas (LGAs) include Kosofe, Oshodi-Isolo, Somolu, Mushin, Apapa, Ikeja, Lagos Island, Lagos Mainland, Surulere, and Eti-Osa.

According to the Commissioner, the ban also extends to the following local council development areas under the LGAs: Ojodu, Onigbongbo, Lagos Island East, Yaba, and Coker Aguda, as well as Itire-Ikate, Eti-Osa West, Iru Victoria Island, Ikoyi-Obalende, Ikosi-Isheri, Agboyi-Ketu, Isolo, Ejigbo, Bariga, and Odi-Olowo.
