The Lagos State Government has vowed to crackdown on criminals vandalising Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) buses in the State.
This announcement follows an incident on Tuesday, August 13, when hoodlums attacked a BRT bus, robbing passengers under the guise of protesting the seizure of motorcycles by the state’s task force.
The attack, which occurred around 1 p.m, saw a large mob swarm a bus travelling from Mile 2 to Leventis as it approached the Ore-Ofe bus stop on the Orile axis.
The assailants assaulted passengers, stabbing them with sharp objects and stealing phones and other valuables, causing widespread panic.
In a statement , Managing Director, Lagos Bus Service Limited (LBSL), Mr. Idowu Oguntona, described the attacks as ‘alarming and unacceptable,’ asserting the government’s zero tolerance for such acts of lawlessness.
Speaking at the LBSL headquarters, he said: “The recent trend of hoodlums attacking our buses and passengers has become intolerable,” Oguntona stated. “These criminals, who cannot be true Lagosians but rather agents of anarchy, have no place in any decent society.”
Mr. Oguntona assured Lagosians that their safety remains the top priority for LBSL and that security agencies are actively working to apprehend those responsible for the heinous acts. He issued a stern warning to potential perpetrators, emphasising that such behaviour will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
The Lagos State Government has pledged to take all necessary legal measures to protect residents and visitors, reassuring commuters of their safety on public transportation throughout the state.
“We are committed to ensuring that justice is served and that our public transportation system remains safe for all,” Oguntona added.
