Enough Is Enough (EiE) Nigeria has ranked State Houses of Assembly in Nigeria on the level of their engagement with the public, with the Lagos State Assembly being the only legislative house with its members’ contact available online.
This was disclosed in a EiE report entitled ‘Legislative Engagement: Why Are Our State Legislators Inaccessible’ compiled by EiE Research as at December 2023. It is captured under the non-profit’s Shine-Your-Eye initiative.
The three metrics measured include if the Houses of Assembly have active websites; whether members’ contacts were available online and if the 2024 budget has been published online.
According to EiE, “36 state websites were reviewed. Eight State Houses of Assembly have websites. One has updated the contact details of new members online. Nine have their 2024 budgets published online.”
From the report, Lagos State has not published its 2024 budget online, which raises questions about its openness and transparency.
“The role of state legislators cannot be underestimated in national development. This makes it imperative for citizens to engage state lawmakers for optimal representation and maximum service delivery,” the report said.
