Lagos Assembly appeals for scholarship for Teargas Victim Aminat Alege

Lagos State House of Assembly has appealed to the state government to grant scholarship to Aminat Alege, a student of Adams Memorial High School who lost one of her eyes during a fracas between the students of Agege Junior high School and Abibat Mogaji Secondary School.

Its Committee on Education made the plea at plenary monitored by our Correspondent on Thursday.

The Speaker of the Assembly Rt. Hon.  Mudashiru Obasa had mandated the Committee to make investigations into the incident at a plenary session recently.
Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Sangodara Mosunmola, who pleaded on the victim’s behalf, said as part of investigation into the unfortunate incident, teachers of the school, the parents of the victim and the Commissioner of Education and others were invited for discussion.

In an attempt not to be arrested amongst the fighting students, Miss Alege hid behind a car after leaving the mosque but got hit by teargas canister shot by the police in an attempt to disperse the students.

While commending the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, for helping to meet Miss Aminat’s hospital bills, Hon. Sangodara stated that though she had lost one of her eyes, the government should grant her scholarship.

She added that schools should be mandated to embark on guidance and counseling as a subject in a bid to properly guide students.

In her contribution, Member representing Lagos Island Constituency 1, Hon. Olumegbon Omolara said that moral and ethics should also be added to the schools’ syllabus to help nurture students’ minds.

In another developmet the House also adopted the recommendations of the Committee on Local Government Administration and Chieftaincy Affairs and Rural Development to suspend Mr. Azeez Adebayo Dawodu, a councillor in Onigbongbo Local Council Development Area.

Chairman of the House Committee, Hon. Ganiu Okanlawon, who read the recommendations, advised that councillors should have a harmonious working relationship with the chairman and leaders of the council.

The committee also recommended that the leader of the council should ensure that peace and unity reign among the councillors.

The committee recommended the scrapping of the office of the Deputy Majority Leader which was created by the Leader of the council.

The lawmakers said there is no provision for such in the law guiding local governments in the state.
