Lagos approves construction of 100 new public toilets

The Lagos State Government has approved the construction of 100 public toilet units across the state to combat open defecation and improve sanitation.

Open defecation remains a public health and environmental challenge in Lagos, worsened by rapid population growth. This initiative aligns with the state’s Resilience Strategy to provide accessible sanitation facilities in all Local Government Areas.

Announcing the project on World Toilet Day 2024, Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said the theme, “Use the Toilet and Have Peace,” underscores the urgency of addressing the global sanitation crisis. Wahab noted that the project demonstrates the state’s commitment to Sustainable Development Goal 6, which aims for universal access to water and sanitation by 2030.

“The state aims to ensure a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable future for residents of Lagos State,” Wahab said.
