The Ijora Underbridge, infamous for its unauthorized settlements and mountains of debris, is undergoing a major facelift.
Following the removal of makeshift structures and debris by concerned authorities recently, the Lagos State Government has announced plans to transform the site into a recreational space for city residents.
Commissioner of Environment, Tokunbo Wahab, tweeted on Wednesday that a team led by the General Manager of LASPARK, Hon. Adetoun Popoola, along with the Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Hon. Mobolaji Ogunlende, and the Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Mr. Abiodun Ogunleye, has begun an initiative to convert the area into a recreational space.
“This endeavour aims to restore the public space for the benefit of Lagos residents, with community members also participating in the inspection and planning process,” the tweet partly reads.
The project dovetails with the ongoing refurbishment of the National Theatre Complex, creating a synergy that the Commissioner for Environment , described as “a comprehensive ‘Renewed Hope’ approach to urban regeneration.”
