Mojeed Iyiola, the chairman of the Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN), Lagos State Chapter, has explained that the state government’s maize palliative significantly benefited the industry leading to a drop in maize prices.
In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Thursday, April 18, Iyiola remarked on the reduction in prices after the subsidy.
He explained that the cost of a crate of eggs at the farm gate decreased from between N3,500 and N3,700 to N3,200 and N3,400 due to the government’s intervention.
Iyiola also pointed out that retailers and middlemen sell eggs at prices ranging from N3,800 to N4,200 primarily for their profit.
His words:
“We received about 150,000 tons of maize in February from the Lagos State government as palliative to cushion the effect of high feed prices.
“The major benefit of the palliative is that it actually cushioned the cost of production for most poultry farmers in the state.
“The palliative was beneficial as it made the cost of some poultry produce, especially eggs to drop.”
Speaking further, Iyiola called on the federal government to follow the Lagos example in providing maize palliative to poultry farmers across Nigeria to cushion the effect of high maize prices on the industry.
