Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat has identified three existential threats to Lagos: extreme heat, extreme cold and water rising above sea level.
Why it matters: Lagos is a coastal city bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and is at considerable risk of being submerged in coming years if appropriate measures are not taken.
Go deeper: The deputy governor made the comment on Wednesday during a media chat with journalists at the Eko Hotel and Suites in Victoria Island.
Quote: “If we do not move water, water will move you,” Hamzat said. “That is why when you see the Ministry of the Environment removing structures on waterways, people begin to read ethnicity and religion into it. That is why we invite you who disseminate information to let people see the danger these things pose to us.”
