Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu hosted a dinner in Lagos on Sunday in honour of Nigeria’s Chief Justice, Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, celebrating her as “a proud daughter of Lagos”.
Justice Kekere-Ekun’s was praised for her outstanding leadership and the hope it brings for the future of the judiciary and Nigeria at large.
“As the second woman ever to hold the position of Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kekere-Ekun embodies a source of pride for every Lagosians. Her exemplary leadership serves as a guiding light for women and young girls across Nigeria, demonstrating that excellence transcends gender,” Sanwo-Olu said.
The event highlighted Justice Kekere-Ekun’s contributions to the judiciary, with attendees commending her for upholding judicial integrity and inspiring future generations. Supporters applauded her career as a promising step forward for the legal profession in Nigeria.
However, the meeting also drew criticism from some analysts. A few commentators raised concerns about the optics of the Chief Justice meeting with a sitting governor, given Sanwo-Olu’s position as a public officeholder.
“The CJN and a litigant. Justice is no longer blind,” one analyst remarked, reflecting apprehension about potential conflicts of interest.
