In 2011, the Speaker of the Lagos House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, registered a company in the United States, according to government records reviewed by Ikeja Record.
The Nigerian version of the company, De Kingrun Multipurpose, registered in 2008, was, in 2020, linked to multiple misappropriation of public funds.
Mr. Obasa, at the time, denied any wrong-doing. (Read our profile of Mr. Obasa for more)
The US company was registered in the state of Georgia where Mr Obasa was, in 2023, presented with an honorary citizenship at the Georgia Legislative Black Conference in Atlanta, for his “service to the State of Georgia” and Nigeria.
It was not immediately clear what his “service to the state of Georgia” means. The Georgia Legislative Black Caucus did not respond to an inquiry from Ikeja Record.
Meanwhile, the American business was dissolved in September 2020, at the peak of a public investigation into Mr. Obasa’s financial dealings as Speaker. In October 2020, the Economic and Financial Crimes brought in Mr. Obasa for questioning.
In 2021, a likely associate of Mr. Obasa, Adegoriola Oyenusi, who has been linked to land-grabbing in Ogun state, also registered a company with the name ‘De Kingrun’ in the state of Georgia.
