Sanwo-Olu to open five roads in Ikeja 

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on January 10, will commission five strategic roads in Ikeja GRA, spanning 6.134 km, along with six major roads totaling 4.7 km across Akoka, Bariga, and Gbagada on January 9. The projects include St. Finbarr’s Road, Asani Street, Tijani Ashogbon Street, and others, improving access from the University of Lagos to Deeper Life Church in Gbagada. Roads in Ikeja GRA, including Oba Dosumu Street and Oduduwa Way, feature upgraded drainage to curb flooding. 

Lagos Assembly passes N3.4 trillion budget for 2025

The Lagos State House of Assembly has approved a N3.37 trillion budget for 2025, with N1.3 trillion for recurrent expenditure and N2.07 trillion for capital projects. Speaker Mudashiru Obasa directed the Clerk to transmit the budget to Sanwo-Olu, who proposed it with a N408.9 billion deficit to be financed through loans and bonds.

Ikeja Electric decries rising vandalism, energy theft

The power distribution company has condemned the rise in vandalism and energy theft within its network, which disrupts power supply and affects customers. Head of Corporate Communications, Kingsley Okotie cited a recent case in Ikorodu where illegal connections were made. The company has taken legal action against two suspects, with their trial set for January 28, 2025. Ikeja Electric urged communities and security agencies to collaborate in protecting its assets and reducing the impact of vandalism on operations.

Alhaji Mohammed Umar installed as Seriki Fulani of Badagry

The  Aholu of Kweme Kingdom in Badagry, Oba Sejiro James has installed Alhaji Mohammed Umar as the new Seriki Fulani of Badagry in a ceremony attended by Fulani socio-cultural groups from the South-West and the Republic of Benin. During the event at Sito Gbethrome Community, Oba James emphasised the peace-loving nature of the Fulani people and urged Umar to stay vigilant in addressing community issues. Alhaji Saidu Yusuf, Chairman of APC Arewa Communities in Lagos, called for unity between Fulani and Yoruba communities.

Landmark Africa to relocate Lagos Headquarters 

Landmark Africa, the company behind Landmark Beach Resort in Lagos, has announced plans to relocate its Nigerian headquarters and expand into three Nigerian states and two African countries. The CEO Paul Onwuanibe cited the $80 million loss from the April 2024 demolition of the resort as the reason for seeking geographical diversification. “We’re going to move our Nigeria HQ out of Lagos and our events and tourism platform out of Nigeria,” Onwuanibe said in an interview on The KK Show – Key to Keys podcast. The company has already chosen three states for expansion after evaluating offers from 12 governors.

HND graduates protest exclusion from NYSC scheme

Full-time HND graduates who previously completed part-time ND programs have protested their exclusion from the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). The protest, held on January 6 at the Lagos NYSC secretariat, saw graduates calling for inclusion, with Majaro Temitope describing the policy as discriminatory. “We worked hard to transition from part-time ND to full-time HND,” he said to Punch Newspaper. NYSC officials has assured the protesters that their concerns were being addressed at the national level.

UNILAG records low application for federal student loan programme

Despite 35,691 eligible students, only 4,664 UNILAG students have applied for the Federal Government’s interest-free Student Loan Programme. Director of the university’s Center for Information Technology and Systems, Professor Mohammed Amuda shared this while highlighting the programme’s benefits in a released document issued to UNILAG Sun. 

He said the loan includes a no interest charges with repayment starting two years after NYSC. He attributed the low application rate to limited awareness and urged students to visit www.nelfund.gov.ng to apply.

Police detain officers for extorting Lagos photographer 

The Nigeria Police Force has arrested officers from the NRC Police Station in Kajola, Lagos, who extorted N30,000 from photographer Francis Alagbe on December 20. Muyiwa Adejobi, the Force PRO, confirmed their detention in Abuja, saying, “The video is clear; we will sanction them.” He added that he would follow up on their orderly room trial upon returning from Enugu.

APD Mansard Place to open workspace 

APD Mansard Place will launch a new workspace in February 2025, in partnership with Regus. Located on the 3rd floor of a 6-story building, the space aims to support Lagos’ growing business community. Ayo Akinmade, Regus Country Manager, highlighted the location’s strategic value due to the city’s expanding tech ecosystem, offering private offices, shared spaces, and meeting rooms for businesses of all sizes.

The third season of The Real Housewives of Lagos is set to premiere on January 12, 2025, with returning stars Laura Ikeji Kanu, Mariam Timmer, and Carolyna Hutchings, alongside three new cast members. The show will showcase the women’s dynamic lives in Lagos, balancing family, friendship, and business. New episodes air Sundays at 8PM on Africa Magic Showcase, with episodes available on Showmax starting January 13.
