The federal government has commenced a comprehensive repair of the third mainland bridge that will last three months.
For commuters and road users dreading what the next three months will look like on the third mainland bridge, the federal government has promised that the bridge will not be completely closed for repairs.
According to the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, the three-month maintenance work on the bridge will not cause any discomfort to motorists. He assured that the bridge will only be partially closed on weekdays between midnight and 4.00 a.m.
However, on Saturdays and Sundays, the bridge will be completely closed to traffic.
The first phase of repair will involve ensuring the structural integrity of the bridge, removing the excess asphalt on the surface, and enhancing the aesthetics of the upper deck components.
During the Minister’s visit to Lagos on Friday, he acknowledged the need for multiple contractors to be engaged due to the urgency of the project, which will conclude in Phase Four. This final phase will focus on repairing deflected slabs, strengthening bearings, reinforcing piers, and renovating pile caps.
Third Mainland Bridge recently underwent emergency repairs, which necessitated a full closure for 24 hours from midnight on October 21 to midnight on October 22.
