Energy-to-Waste: Lagos to power 40, 000 homes with electricity from refuse

The Lagos state government has announced its plan to generate electricity from solid waste and power not less than 40,000 homes across the state.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu made this known on Tuesday via his X page and added that the state government would partner with Harvest Waste Consortium based in Amsterdam to achieve the feat.

Harvest Waste Consortium is a spin-out company of the 142-year-old waste management company of the municipality of Amsterdam. The company is already working with a wider network of partners to develop opportunities for many countries.

According to Sanwo-Olu, the high-efficiency Waste-to-Energy plant will be built on the Epe landfill. He added that the project will transform the state’s waste management and energy production.

Governor Sanwo-Olu said the new waste-to-energy plant will process 2,250 tonnes of waste daily, generating 60-75 megawatts of electricity annually.

He also said: “This partnership with our Dutch counterparts represents a monumental step forward in our waste management strategy. It promises to reduce 550,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions daily, improve air quality, and divert 95% of our waste from landfills.

“Beyond environmental benefits, this project will stimulate economic activities, attract major investments, and create jobs in Lagos. It’s a testament to our commitment to building a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable city for all.

“With the full backing of the Dutch government and the expertise of Harvest Waste Consortium, we are turning our waste into wealth. This collaboration marks a new era of international cooperation to solve local challenges. Together, we are building a better Lagos.”

Present at the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the state and the Dutch firm were the Deputy Consul General Dutch Consulate, Ms Leonie Van der Stijl, Lagos state’s commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Mr Mosopefolu George, and other dignitaries.
