As #EndBadGovernance protesters fill the streets of Lagos, many residents frustrated by telecommunication network challenges have voiced their grievances.
A significant number of MTN subscribers have reported noticeable slowdowns in their network services.
This has led to a wave of grumbling and allegations on X (formerly Twitter) with users questioning whether the government is intentionally metering communication during the demonstrations.
The timing of the network issues has led many to speculate that there might be a deliberate push by the authorities to restrict information flow during the protests.
An X user on her handle, @maxvayshia, said, “If MTN is not careful, the people will focus on them after this abominable government. The people will demand they leave our country as deliberate saboteurs to the people’s progress and a clear and present danger to citizens. Barring of lines and nationwide bad network, is NO coincidence.”
Another X user, @effizzzyy questioned, “Abi government get hand for this bad MTN network??”
@Khanstillday added, “MTN is one of our problems in this country, why does the government always use them as a weapon against us? There is no single explanation why MTN network shouldn’t be working this morning.”
@thesheddyking shared his frustration, noting: “Wetin MTN do me today ehn. If you work there, make sure you don’t miss church service this Sunday.”
The complaints arise amid the barring of SIM cards earlier in the week, whereby thousands of MTN subscribers were disconnected, limiting their ability to make calls or send messages with their lines. This adds to the public’s suspicion and discontent.
Despite the widespread concerns and inquiries, MTN has yet to issue an official statement addressing the issue, except for reports that it has shut its offices nationwide.
