A dumpsite near Alimosho General Hospital, Igando, has raised health concerns among patients and visitors.
The site, located directly opposite the hospital, emits a strong odor, creating an unhealthy environment for hospital workers, patients, and visitors.
A report by the News Agency of Nigeria had highlighted complaints from hospital visitors about the dumpsite’s impact on their well-being.
During a visit to the area, The Record observed at least two other dumpsites in different locations near the hospital.
A hospital staff member who craved anonymity told The Record that the stench becomes unbearable, especially during the rainy season.
A resident who has lived in the area for years and also asked not to be identified, expressed skepticism about any government intervention.
The resident said the dumpsite has been there for a long time with no signs of relocation.
It appears that despite repeated pleas from residents and hospital users, the state government has yet to address the issue, leaving many uncertain about whether any action will be taken.
In October, the Lagos State Waste Management Authority said it would shut down the Solous landfill in Igando, a major dumpsite near the hospital. However, it is not clear when the shutdown will be completed.
Alimosho General Hospital is one of the major public health care facilities in Alimosho, the most populated local government in Lagos.
The hospital serves more than 49,000 patients every month, offering a host of services including surgery and psychiatric consultations.
