The Lagos state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Friday, April 12, met with Zubaida Umar, the director-general of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

Governor Sanwo-Olu disclosed that the visit by the NEMA team was to show solidarity after the fire at Dosunmu Market which destroyed many buildings.

The governor who expressed appreciation to the agency for its quick response towards the incident, revealed that his administration is assessing the extent of damage caused by the fire in order to support the affected traders and work “decisively to prevent such incidents in future.”

He wrote on Facebook:

“Today, I met with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) team led by the Director-General, Mrs. Zubaida Umar.

“They visited to show solidarity after the fire incident at Docemo Market, where multiple buildings were destroyed. I appreciate NEMA’s quick response and the collaborative efforts of both state and federal teams in managing the fire.
“It is quite disheartening to witness the reckless handling and storage of flammable materials in the market because this hinders our firefighting efforts.
“We are currently assessing the damage to support the affected traders and will work decisively to prevent such incidents in the future.”
Recall that during his visit to the fire scene at Dosunmu Market on Lagos Island on Thursday, April 11, the governor made some critical discoveries. According to Sanwo-Olu, the fire outbreak was as a result of mishandling flammable materials.

Noting that the inferno led to significant losses, the governor stated that his administration has initiated a full investigation to determine the cause and implement stricter safety protocols.

The governor particularly disclosed that he was disappointed with the conversion of residential buildings into storage for hazardous materials.

He said that this practice contributed to the rapid spread of the fire and must end. He said the state will hold accountable those who flout our building and safety standards.
