The Coalition of Lagos Indigenous Youths has strongly opposed the alleged endorsement of Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, for the 2027 Lagos State governorship race by the Coalition of Nigerian Youth Leaders (CONYL).
Why it matters: The 2027 elections are still more than two years away but with Governor Sanwo-Olu ineligible to run again, speculations about the next state governor have become rife.
Go deeper: The coalition, responding to the CONYL’s endorsement, argued that Lagos should be governed by true indigenes, citing the historical lack of leadership by local residents since 1999. The group called for more development in the state, accusing successive governments of neglecting the hinterlands and failing to address infrastructure deficits. They also expressed concerns about external influence on traditional rulers, warning against attempts to manipulate endorsements ahead of the 2027 election.
Quote: “There is no vacancy for non-indigenes in Lagos State in 2027. The marginalisation is too much and has led to underdevelopment,” spokesperson for the Coalition of Lagos Indigenous Youths, Abdul Kareem Whyte, said.
