DSS, Lawmakers lash at House of Assembly

Chaos erupted on Monday as DSS operatives stormed the Lagos Assembly, allegedly on the clerk’s orders. Lawmakers forced entry into the chamber, reaffirming support for Speaker Mojisola Meranda. Lawmakers condemned the DSS presence, calling it an attack on democracy, the Punch reported. The crisis follows a court case filed by ousted Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa. Mr. Obasa is seeking to discredit the process of his impeachment and potentially reclaim his seat.

New Police Commissioner appointed for Lagos

The Police Service Commission has appointed Olohundare Moshood Jimoh as the new Commissioner of Police for Lagos. Prior to this, Jimoh was the Commissioner for Ports Authority, Eastern Ports, Channels TV reported. While the commission did not specify reasons for his appointment, observers suggest it may relate to the ongoing leadership crisis in the Lagos State House of Assembly.

Lagos partners with Lafarge Africa to convert waste into fuel

Lagos State has signed an MoU with Lafarge Africa PLC to use non-recyclable combustible waste as an alternative fuel.“This partnership is a significant step towards achieving a zero-waste future for Lagos,” Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab tweeted. Lafarge will collect waste from dumpsites and companies, converting it into fuel at their Ewekoro Plant.

Sanwo-Olu targets year-round tourism growth

The state government is pushing for a tourism industry that runs all year, not just during ‘Detty December’. “Tourism is a 24-hour business, and activities must be available daily,” the Special Adviser Idris Aregbe said at the Art of Love in Lagos event. He emphasized that Governor Sanwo-Olu sees tourism as key to economic growth, the Guild NG reported. After touring the J.K. Randle Centre, Aregbe highlighted Lagos’ cultural appeal to foreign investors. Nike Art Gallery’s founder, Nike Davies-Okundaye, praised the government’s efforts and urged the Federal Government to ease entry policies for tourists.

Concerns rise over Makoko waterfront development, displacement risks

Land reclamation for the FBT Coral Estate development on Makoko’s waterfront has sparked concerns from the community and environmental groups over potential displacement. The project, a 54.58-hectare mixed-use scheme backed by the Lagos State government, threatens the homes and livelihoods of Makoko residents, the Guardian reported. Executive Director of Rethinking Cities, Deji Akinpelu criticized the lack of transparency in the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) and called for the halt of the project until a comprehensive and inclusive resettlement plan is developed to protect the rights of the affected communities.

Ounje Eko Farmers’ Subsidy Programme kicks off

The Lagos State Government has begun implementing the Ounje Eko Farmers’ Subsidy Programme, offering a 25% subsidy on poultry and fish feed, mechanization services, and fertilizer distribution to farmers. The initiative aligns with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s push to revive the livestock and aquaculture sectors and enhance food sufficiency in the state.

Eredo residents appeal to Sanwo-Olu to approve Oba-elect

Residents of Eredo LCDA in Epe, Lagos, have appealed to Sanwo-Olu to approve Prince Adetomiwa Odutuga as the Oba-elect. In During a peaceful protest, community leaders, youths, and women expressed their support, citing Odutuga’s contributions to the community, including aid for widows and youth education. “We want the Lagos State government to crown Adetomiwa as the next Oba for the peace of our town,” the Iyalode of Odo-Iragushi, Chief Rasheedat Oladega said. Agboyi-Ketu LCDA offers free JAMB forms to empower students

Agboyi-Ketu Local Council Development Area (LCDA) has announced the distribution of free JAMB forms to eligible candidates as part of its commitment to education.“This is more than just giving out forms; it’s about creating opportunities and opening doors,” Executive Chairman Dele Oshinowo said. The application runs from February 17th–18th, with details available on the official flier.

Accion MfB, CrediCorp launch tricycle financing to boost livelihoods

Accion Microfinance Bank (MfB) and CrediCorp have launched an affordable tricycle financing scheme in Lagos to empower riders and drive economic growth. At the handover event, Accion MfB Managing Director, Taiwo Joda credited President Bola Tinubu for the initiative, ThisDay reported. “This is not just about financial intervention but about making people have meaning in their lives,” Joda said. He highlighted Accion’s role in providing access to financial tools, allowing riders to pay N3.6 million per tricycle in instalments over 24 months.

State DSVA introduces free online course on child safeguarding

The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) has launched a free online course to help parents, caregivers, and educators protect children. The Lagos State Child Safeguarding and Protection Course covers crucial topics like child rights, bullying, positive discipline, and creating safe environments. Designed for flexibility, the course allows participants to learn at their own pace, with the goal of strengthening child protection measures statewide.
