Lagos launches Africa’s first subnational carbon exchange project

The Lagos State Government has launched a subnational Carbon Exchange to reduce carbon emissions and combat climate change. Developed with GreenPlinth Africa as part of an $80-million Paris Agreement Compliant Clean Cookstoves Project, the initiative will distribute six million clean cookstoves for free, with the implementation stage starting in June 2025. It also includes a “pay-to-cook” programme that offers beneficiaries a ₦10,000 monthly stipend and free health insurance, The Guardian Newspaper reported. Additionally, 300 million trees will be planted across Badagry, Epe, and Ikorodu, generating 80,000 jobs. A new manufacturing facility will create 13,000 permanent jobs, with workers earning ₦100,000 monthly. Communities will benefit from an annual ₦750 million green development fund. 

Indigenes condemn reinstatement of Speaker Mudashiru Obasa

Lagos indigenes have condemned the reinstatement of Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, calling it a shame and a disgrace. They also criticized the Governor and House members for failing to take a strong stand on the issue, Tribune Online Newspaper reported. They stated, “The Governor and House members lost the best opportunity to assert their powers and authority to free themselves from shackles,.” they said.

E-call up system temporarily paused following meeting with key unions

The Ministry of Transportation has temporarily suspended the e-call up system regulating truck movements around the Lekki axis. This decision follows a meeting with key unions in the petroleum and transport sectors to ensure compliance with parking regulations, Nairametrics reported. Meanwhile, 82 motorcycles were impounded on Tuesday for violating the Okada ban. The motorcycles were seized from areas including Alakija, Iyana-Iba, Festac, and Mile 2 Bye Berger Suya inward Mile 2 Oke.

Digital malaria eradication program launched as state reports 900,000 annual cases

The Lagos State government launched a digital malaria eradication program. Speaking at the launch on Tuesday, Health Commissioner Akin Abayomi revealed that despite a decline in cases from 15% to 2.6% between 2010 and 2025, the state still reports 900,000 malaria cases annually, Premium Times Newspaper reported

Residents of Ikeja air force base face ongoing two-week power outage

Residents of Sam Ethnan Air Force Base in Ikeja are grappling with a two-week power outage that has severely impacted businesses and left many residents stranded. The electricity supply was cut off due to the barracks’ outstanding bills with the electricity company, Niche Nigeria reported. The prolonged disconnection is causing significant disruption, with no resolution in sight. “This is not the first time we’ve experienced a blackout, but it seems there is no solution. The last time, the issue was resolved, and electricity was restored on a rationed basis. But for two weeks now, there has been no power at all,” said resident, Tutu Adeboye.

Miscreants arrested for extorting pedestrians on Oshodi bridge 

In response to reports of extortion, the state government has arrested miscreants on the closed Oshodi bridge, which was shut down for repairs due to structural issues. Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, confirmed the arrests on Tuesday and stated that further arrests will be made if such activities persist, The Nation Newspaper reported. He also assured that the alternative bridge remains open while repairs continue.

State reaffirms ban on flogging in schools, advocates counseling for discipline

The state Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Jamiu Alli-Balogun, has reaffirmed the state’s ban on flogging in schools. In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, he condemned the practice of flogging students for indiscipline, stating that it is not an effective method of correction. He emphasized that counseling is a better approach, saying, “Against flogging of students, we have adopted counseling as a measure of correction.”

Lagos hosts three day training program for inspection officers on CNG

The Lagos State Government has initiated a three-day training programme for Vehicle Inspection and Safety Commission officers. This is to equip them with the skills needed to oversee Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered vehicles on Lagos roads, PM Newspaper reported. “It is the duty of the Commission to train officials to ensure the safety of lives and public well-being,” the Director-General of the Safety Commission, Mr Lanre Mojola said.

Six arraigned for selling alcohol in traffic

The Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (KAI) has arraigned six suspects for selling alcohol in traffic in Iyana-Isolo-Ilasamaja. Corps Marshal Major Olaniyi Olatunbosun Cole stated that such activities could contribute to the high rate of accidents caused by drunk driving and passenger-induced chaos. He added that the suspects have been charged in court and will face prosecution, The Punch Newspaper Reported. 

Psquare’s elder brother arraigned in Ikeja court for alleged theft

Elder brother and former manager of Psquare, Jude Okoye, was arraigned by the EFCC on Tuesday in Ikeja on four-count charges of stealing $1,019,762.87. The offences are alleged to have occurred between 2016 and 2023 and contravene Sections 278 and 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
